So, I've traded up to the iFly720 with a SkyGuard TWX-AHRS, and am in general delighted with the performance as compared to my iFly 700 + Radenna SkyRadar ADSB receiver (which, btw, I'm seeking to sell privately).

The new set up has uncluttered my glare shield, as I've positioned the SkyGuard box between the back seats. I've got the blade antenna mounted in an aft window. The clarity and responsiveness of the 720 is wonderful, and the instrument cluster using the artificial horizon and HSI is just terrific: the cross check with the steam guages is identical, except for altitude, of course.

Nexrad and Text WX are working just great. It's wise to cross-check the NEXRAD depiction with your lightning detection system. I've got a StrikeFinder, and it could save you some grief in rapid buildups. The NEXRAD maps can be 15 minutes old, and possibly more.

On my old set up, the Radenna SkyRadar would sometimes yield valuable traffic avoidance information, but the inconsistency in performance away from busy terminal areas was obvious. Most of my desire to upgrade stems from the expectation that the Sky Guard TWX would show traffic consistently: This has not so far been the case, but I suspect I'm overlooking something in my set up of the system.

On the phone with Shane, he was talking about inputing data specific to my aircraft that the transceiver would relay to the ADSB ground stations: a tail number, and a squwak code, or maybe a generic "blank" code? I've not been able to find my way to where this is accomplished with the 720 and the SkyGuard. The SkyGuard site refers me to AdventurePilot, and the AdventurePilot 720 pdf manual doesn't seem to have what I need.

Can anyone out there explain how to fully configure the SkyGuard TWX with my new 720?

Thanks,

Elliott

Ok, so I dug back into the paperwork in the shipping box, and found my answers there: It should be as simple as: Go to Menu, SkyGuard Control Panel, SetUp, and enter the variables. I don't know why I haven't seen these choices yet. Headed back out to the plane to try this... Hunh...

Yes. Mystery solved. Once the SkyGuard gets done with its "handshake" to the 720, the SkyGuard TWX Control Panel will be a choice found on the iFly Menu. Set your Transponder Squwak, ICAO identifyer, a/c tail number there. I need to go fly up to Savannah to see if the traffic alerts begin to show now.

I also found how to set the AHRS to level on the iFly: just tap on the artificial horizon, and the Set to Level button is offered among the choices opened up by that tap. I really do enjoy having the back-up artificial horizon along with the HSI right on the chart.

Thanks, Elliott

Elliott: First thing you should do is go the the FAA aircraft registration web site and look up your aircraft by your Registraton N-number. registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/nnum... Find the "Mode S code base 16" for your aircraft and write it down - it is a hexadecimal number, looks something like AC9FD0. Then fire up both the 720 and the SkyGuard and connect them via WiFi. (don't just do the WiFi set-up after it boots, but also launch the Nav app and go to Menu-About-Connected Devices and select the SkyGuard TWX). When you are connected, then the Menu button pop-up will show a selection for the "SkyGuard Control Panel". When you open that, there will be a button to set your parameters: enter your N-Number and the Mode S hexadecimal code you got from the FAA web site. Once you click Set or OK, it will store these parameters in the SkyGuard's firmware, so once set it will remember it and you should not have to do this again unless you change aircraft. I am seeing gobs of traffic and hope this solves your problem. By the way, it is recommended for best ADSB reception all SkyGuard antennae be vertical, not horizontal. And make sure they are securely plugged in and tightened. Enjoy. ====Ralph

Elliott,

You should have also receiver the SetUp instructions in the box with the Vision Pro, this sheet tells you how to go to the FAA site and get the ICAO code, etc and how to enter into the Vision-Pro unit. Once you do this upon initial setup, you should not have to do it again. Then you can just select the SkyGuardTWX Control Panel from the Menu to change the Squawk or other config options. I hope this helps.
