Chas, have you tried using that external antenna on your iFly - if so, how well did it work? The antenna we sell is "active" - meaning there is circuitry in the receiving end that boosts the signal. So the antenna we use is 'tuned' for the device, and not every antenna is equal in this regard.

Jerry, do you have any more info on where the FAA said it's okay to use non-certified GPS with a transponder? I'm googling a blank...

Thanks!
Walter

Walter

when I look at your pic for the external antennae, it looks very much like the antennae I used for garmin 195...have you had any experience with that antennae? I'm sure there are a number of us who have 195s laying around... I haven't found my old antennae or else I would have tried it.... although I've never needed it, I would put it back in the airplane for any instance where it was required....

sorry to hijack the orginal topic... the antennae discussion got my attention

The ad for the Clarity ADS-B states that in addition to other features the unit GPS is WAAS enabled. Does this mean that when used with the Ifly720 WAAS will be available on the screen? Also, I am not certain of the logic prohibiting WAAS on the Ifly when it is already available on many other portable GPS units. I just upgraded from the Ifly 700 to the 720. It would be great if I did not have to rely on my Garmin 396 for WAAS. The 720, if WAAS enabled would be a great "reference only" back up when standard, approved instruments are used for approaches. It would certainly be better than the 396 as a backup.

The iFly does not use external GPS signals from connected receivers. My SkyRadar has its own GPS, but I have removed the puck antenna required for good reception since that feature is not used.

I would bet that statements like "It would be great if I did not have to rely on my Garmin 396 for WAAS" are what keep Walter up at night with the cold shivers. :) The non-WAAS iFly is already completely adequate for providing "reference only" situational awareness cues (like georeferenced position on approach plates). The word "backup" should never appear in combination with "iFly" and "IFR". A backup would be a second GPS in the panel with an independent power supply.

When I became a pilot over 47 years ago we used ADF, paper charts, dead reckoning, VOR, and paper approach plates. Pilot skills and good judgement were the keys to situational awareness. When Loran C became an accepted part of general aviation panels it was placarded with "not for primary navigation." When other handheld GPS companies marketed WAAS enabled equipment they did not do so with the intent of circumventing FAR's. It was in response to market demand and based upon the assumption that pilots will adhere to the FAR's and continue to use good judgement. I was one of the early Ifly700 customers. I now have an Ifly720. I agree that both units are adequate for situational awareness, just as paper charts, dead reckoning, ADF, and non-electronic or geo-referneced approach plates had been. That said, I believe that adding WAAS capability will make the Ifly even better. In the final analysis, pilot judgement is the key to situational awareness. Therefore, there is no need for Walter to "stay up at night with the cold shivers."
