While flying last week, I had an idea about an enhancement to the NRST button.  Currently, after the NRST button is pushed, the user is presented with a list of airports with the closest ones being listed first.  Once the user selects the airport of choice and presses the "Direct to" button, the screen returns to the Map view with a magenta line to the airport.  Was wondering if the airport selection could also turn on "Runway Extension" for that airport, to present a little better spatial awareness to the pilot, particularly if it is a real emergency and the pilot is under duress?  Once the app is exited, the runway extensions are turned off.  Or is this just a "frill"?

What do other users think?

Thanks,

Steve

Good idea. I'd like that, too.

Further refining your idea: how about presenting all runways (in case you have to try for the most direct one), but highlight the "recommended" runway (which is based on wind direction).  For that matter, when a user chooses to Extend All in the normal Extend Runways dialog, how about highlighting the recommeded runway in that case also.

Back to your emergency scenario...besides runway(s), isn't it equally important that you get presented with the CTAF (or tower) frequency?  You're going to have to make some radio calls before barging into an airport (unless ATC is handling it for you).  Maybe a good solution is to pop up the QuickView box when you hit the Direct button in the NRST dialog box.  That would save an extra screen tap, and you can see a lot of the airport info at a glance.

FWIW, I would remind folks that "NRST" does not necessarily equal "EMER".

My most common use case for NRST is in local flights where I'm just tooling around.  It's a handy way to quickly get the CTAF for local traffic calls as I wander into/away from nearby fields.  I often use it after local flights to either head for home, or else to one of the nearby fields that has cheaper fuel than my home drome, *then* to home.

While I use NRST often, I have never (knock on wood) needed to use it for an emergency.

NRST would become far less useful to me if it were modified to significantly emphasize emergency use.  I don't want/need it to always assume I'm in full-on panic mode and need immediate help finding the closest landing strip.

I understand the desire to have all the help you can get if you do find yourself in an emergency.  But it would be nice if there were a way to only get that help when it was absolutely necessary, so that the day-to-day "handiness" of NRST is not lost.

Cobra, I like your ideas--except that I think NRST should be reserved for emergencies, no matter how rare they are. So that means two similar functions for very different purposes. (When flying around locally, I usually have FlightPlan set for only one airport--the one I want to ultimately return to--so iFly is always pointing to it.)
