Just a note to anyone that may have a gps issue with the Samsung Tab 3 7" (sm-t110)or possibly other samsung tablets. No one at Samsung could grasp how the gps works with this model, they will tell you that you need an internet connection for the device to start tracking (that is bull crap). What I found is a bug in the software and it took several months to figure it out. It worked intermittently. The speed and direction were always accurate but it would not track me on the moving map (stayed stationary). I finally found that on any moving map app on the tablet I needed to track position and open ifly while I am setting still and it tracks till you kill or close the app. If you accidentally close the app(or swap apps) while flying you will not track on the map again Untill you stop at the next airport and start over. Don't understand it but that is how it works. May one day try a usb gps to see if that works properly though I doubt it.

If that was my tablet, I would return it for a refund if possible. Otherwise, I would grab a usb GPS puck on Ebay or Amazon and try that. If that works, you could also pick up a Stratux ADS-B receiver if you don't already have one and be good to go until 2020.

I had a similar occurance years ago with a (I don't remember) GPS. If it knew where I was as I took off, it could track me just fine. But an airborne reboot would lose position even though I could reboot in a car and it would re-acquire my position with no problem. So one day on a whim I rebooted in the air, and it would not re-acquire. So I slowly pulled the throttle and as I reached a certain repeatable speed, somewhere around 50-60mph I think, it would re-acquire and I could speed back up. My assumption at the time was that it would not lock if it couldn't repeat a position within x feet of itself, but once it duplicated a reasonably close position it was happy enough to call it a "lock".

Funny how issues crop up - all at once? Our fav Samsung S2 8.4 tab has started exhibiting exactly the same behavior in that it won't get a GPS lock on the ground unless it's connected to the 'net. Which has become a real problem lately as the tab has started to freeze or lock up occasionally. Often enough though that we've started using two tabs in the cockpit just in case the primary Samsung locks up during a critical moment.

There have been a couple of occasions when the tab locked up and was rebooted in flight that there simply wasn't any 'net available, so we had to resort to the old mark one eyeball on the chart to keep us on track. Hence the second tab.

Can't wait for the new Samsung tab S3 to come out....tried a Huawei Mediapad M3, but the GPS in our particular unit sucked worse than the Samsung so it went back to Amazon. YMMV

I switched from Android to iPad and never looked back. Also switched from Android phones to iPhone. They just always work.
