While flying back to Colorado yesterday, from Kansas, I noticed a thin red line which outlined a rectangle.  The rectangle crossed state lines and did not move with the airplane icon.  I've searched the User Manual and some forums, without any luck.   Has anyone else noticed this?  If so, is it some type of alert?

Thanks,

Steve

Yes,  I have seen this.  I cannot find an explanation in the user manuals either.  I have figured out that as you zoom out, you see the red retangle.  I think it represents where the boundary is between Conus Nexrad images which updates at a much lower rate than the local Nexrad images you receive when you are within the red retangle.  In other words, the Nexrad weather that is displayed outside the retangle can potentially be much older than the weather displayed within the retangle.  I haven't seen anything in print about this but it seems to be the case.  Hope it helps.

Never seen this - can someone send a pic or a screenshot if it happens again?

Robert, you might be on to something.  Couple years ago at Sun N Fun, I asked the FAA guys how far out (distance from me) will I get updated airport data.  They told me it depends on my altitude and whether I am connecting to the first, second or third tier of ADSB towers.

Brolin,  next time I fly and I see the red rectangle, I will try to remember how to take a "screen shot" on my iPad.

Thanks,

Steve

I have looked at the  ADSB Red Box referenced in this discussion.  I have attached a screenshot from my tablet zoomed out to show the Red Box that is the subject of this discussion.  Interestingly, the red box dissappears when I deselect Nexrad from the Map Menu and re-appears when Nexrad is selected.  This makes me more certain that when you are within the "red box" you are receiving local Nexrad that is uploaded much more frequently than the Conus Nexrad that is displayed when you are outside the "red box" and likely not as current.  This is not to say that this is the case....just my observation.  I wonder why this is not spelled out somewhere.  Hope this helps
