Old Pilot:

This old pilot tried what you suggested i.e. go to airplane mode, and BINGO! I get Nexrad updates afyter turning the WiFi back on. Althoiugh when I go to about> connected devices, it doesn't appear to show any Nexrad activity. It says "Empty".

I guess that if you are not in Airplane Mode it still tries to get Nexrad from a cell.

I noticed that when, at 8500 msl, I tried to get " hi res wind barbs", it asked if I wanted to try to get it from the internet. Just for kicks I tried it and the tablet showed "no heartbeat" because it disconnected from the Navworx WiFi.

I will eventually get the hang of it.

The Hi-Res Winds are a product that is delivered via internet only. That would be a WIFI connection to an internet connected router or via your cell service. They are not available in the air via ADS-B.

Nexrad, Metars, and TAF's are available via the internet (on the ground) or ADS-B (in the air). So, on the ground, again that requires a WIFI connection to an internet connected router or your cell service. In the air, you need an ADS-B receiver and must be receiving a ground station.

With my IPad, I have never had to use airplane mode or disable the cellular service in any way. When flying and connected to my SkyGuard, I can receive ADS-B traffic, Nexrad, metars, and TAF's via ADS-B. I never try to use a cellular signal when flying, but I never have needed to disable it.

In your case, I thought maybe going into airplane mode to disable your cellular radio might help you with your connection to your ADS-B receiver, but I'm not sure why it would. You just need to make sure you turn on your WIFI or bluetooth to connect to your ADS-B receiver, whichever method it uses.

Update: I have since received Nexrad with the unit in Airplane mode and NOT in Airplane mode.

However, it is sporatic.

When I do get Nexrad it actually says so on the map as I am flying. It is usally off to the side and I'm not sure there is a way to remove it from the map to de-clutter.

When I am receiving it I can tell there is activity by hitting About> connected device. I can see the number after the Nexrad heading changing. However, sometimes I don't see any change and I don't see ADS-B after the Nexrad heading in Map Mode.

One time I noticed that, when I clicked on the asterisk after Nexrad in the Map Mode I was given a choice of ADS-B or Internet as a source. However, that is not always a presented option.

We're in SoCal and don't get much rain. So if there is nothing to report would the Nexrad still show that it is active?

Hi John, can you enable the ADS-B logger for me, and then reproduce your symptoms, then Send Bug Report?

ADS-B logger can be enabled from Connected Devices => Wireless Device => Enable ADSB Logger, before take-off.

Then upon landing, Send Bug Report => Select Log => select the "AdsbRaw.bin" file.

From this I can reproduce the whole flight from the ADSB raw data stream, and see what's happening.

NOTE: After reproducing the symptoms, if you restart iFly before Sending Bug report, make sure to answer "No" to the prompt asking you if you want to keep ADSB Logger enabled... because if you answer "Yes", it overwrites the previous log file which contains the symptoms.

If Nexrad is clear, it will still show "(ADSB)" in the header.

Today when flying a 8500 MSL and having 6 towers I again saw that Nerxrad in MAP MODE indicated a delay of 20 minutes since last update which is when I was on the ground before take off.

Secondly, when I hit the asterisk next to the Nexrad in MAP MODE I don't see the option to choose between ADS-B or Internet as I saw once before.

I did not have the phone in AIRPLANE MODE which I have been told is not necessary. Is it necessary?

When I went to "connected device" I could see the numbers in the NEXRAD line changing.

I hope to have a reliable NEXRAD before I leave on the 1800 mile journey to OSH in late July.

Also, I got a "NO HEARTBEAT" even though I had just had 6 towers. Then it indicated "out of range" the back to "Receiving."

I'm starting to think my Navworx unit has issues.
