I'm going to be without a medical for about six months. My Android iFly subscription renewal date is IIRC at the end of April. My plan was to simply not renew and, for the little I will need them, use the charts that I have already bought and paid for until I get my medical back.

However, I now get a warning with the app magnanimously offering to run for five minutes as some kind of "trial." It is difficult for me to see how this benefits Adventure Pilot. As a repeat subscriber and booster for the app, it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and it certaintly doesn't motivate me to re-up a subscription that I don't need. For users who no longer want to run the app, I think it has the same effect. I guess there is the possiblity of a few parasitic users who would run the app with old charts for a few months as an economy measure but eventually they will have to re-up, at which point an annual subscription makes sense due to the high price of a one-shot. (Incidentally I think the one-shot pricing is sensible as a means to motivate subscriptions.)

So ... despite being a loyalist and booster, I am feeling qutie grumpy about not being able to use charts that I have bought and paid for.

Personally, I would renew and not think twice about it. The work continues and improvements continue. People get paid.

I want to say this has been discussed before and that's not the intended behavior, but I'm probably wrong.

Me, I'd try calling AP's customer support and holding off on the grumpy attitude until I explained my situation and heard if they had any suitable suggestions. It's a good company; give 'em a chance before you get yourself too wound up.

I may be wrong, but I think that is the intended behavior. Otherwise, some people would fly with outdated charts and maps and only renew every 2 or 3 years. I think it's appropriate for the app to stop working if not renewed by expiration date. I always renew one month early lest I might forget.

I don't think we're actually buying anything, but paying to use it for a year.

Update: I have a friend who has been considering iFly as a replacement for ForeFlight and I have been encouraging him. Last night he asked if he could borrow my tablet and play with the app. "Sorry, Dan, the app is shutting itself down after 5 minutes of operation, so there's nothing to play with. I have no useful access to the charts that I have purchased."

He was not impressed.
