I've noticed when on the ground and not moving, the green airplane icon on the display seems to dance around in circles. This changes to show my plane's direction as soon as I start moving again. I'm curious why the plane seems "confused" when there is no motion?

Thanks,

Andre'

GPS is only capable of calculating the direction your aircraft is pointing based on motion by comparing the current data point to the previous data point. If there is no motion then the GPS computer doesn't know what direction you are pointing. I have seen handheld, non-aviation GPS units that have a magnetic sensor that points a compass to magnetic north but this isn't normally a standard feature.

I've noticed on other GPS's that if you leave them set for quite some time, leaving the track recording on, you'll end up with a track that looks like a scribble, with points up to several yards, or tens of yards away from the actual location. Each time one of these points are plotted, the GPS thinks it is moving in that direction. The iFly doesn't zoom in enough to show movements this small, but the arrow/aircraft will rotate to the direction calculated.
