Would it be feasible to clip the cigarette plug of the dc power cord off and then direct wire into the airplanes panel?

It's OK to do, but only legal if is an experimental aircraft.

My understanding about the legality of connecting a 700/720 to the aircraft's power bus in a certified airplane is that IT IS LEGAL because the 700/720 is NOT being permanently wired to the aircraft - it can be unplugged at the unit and removed from the aircraft. Cutting off the cigarette lighter plug (or opening it to make sure you have the leads correctly identified) works fine, and is legal, insofar as all wiring is done in accordance with Advisory Circular (AC) 43.13-1b., Chapter 11. A 1 amp fuse is needed to protect the wiring. The logbook entry should be signed off by a certificated mechanic.

PA-22,

Good call on the panel wiring legality. I spoke with my AP yesterday about this, and he indicated that it was OK to hard wire the power cable direct to your aircraft wiring, as long as it is current protected (fuse or circuit brkr). You are correct that the unit is not permanently installed if you have a removable plug. I originally installed my gps this way, and it sure does make for a much neater install with no excess wire hanging. It also frees up the 12v outlet for other accessories.

Is there a plug I can buy to fit the iFly 700 power recepticle so I do not need to chop my lighter plug up? part number or size?

Thanks

Frank
