Thanks for the response.

I am using the Navworx in/out system which receives only 978.

I contacted Navworks about the delay and they claim that the maximum delay is 2 seconds. I am not convinced at this time. So I will use your tip to look at the leading tip off the triangle for traffic.

My friend and I will do tests when the weather cools here in SoCal.

We both have in and out so he will follow and then at a given time he will turn 90 degrees off course and I will relay when I see the change in the display.

We completed the latency tests today.

I had the Navworx in/out and my friend used his Stratux in only.

We were 1 nm apart and when I turned right 90 degrees he saw the change on his phone using IFLY in only 2 seconds.

However, when he turned it to well over 10 seconds to see his turn.

He is getting my location directly from my Navworx out and I get his location from ground radar that has to make a few sweps and then determine he is changing course and then has to send it to a tower that then has to send it to me.

So, not hard to see why we have the latency.

Yep. So you might think about investing a hundred bucks for a dual band Stratux and use that for your In solution. Or can you update your Navworx to receive 1090 for $100?

Your test demonstrated a sad truth. Even when/if everyone updates to ADS-B Out, it will not be a good solution. The ADS-R latency will only get longer.

Why? If everyone has ADS-B out you won't have to wait for the ground station signal. It will be quicker, not slower. The sad truth is all the doubters. People need to stop playing with $100 ADS-B in and get a certified ADS-B in/out system.

Even if everyone were using ADS-B, not everyone will be on the same frequency. Some will be Out'ing on 1090. Others on 978. So there will always be the need for ADS-R. Latency will likely increase because there will be more aircraft requiring their position to be rebroadcast on the opposite frequency than there are now.

Having said that, in John's test above, the fellow with the Stratux wasn't ADS-B Out equipped. So John was seeing TIS-B latency.

So listening on 1090 with a dual band Stratux wouldn't improve that instant situation. (My mistake.) But it would make a difference to John with respect to airliners and others transmitting Out on 1090.

(TIS-B will always be around too, since not everyone will have to be ADS-B Out in uncongested airspace.)
