Real rough explantion.   The AP software is split between the iFly and Dynon D-100.   The iFly 740 connects to the D100 via a serial connection and sends  the Dynon messages using NEMA protocol.  If you have an active flight plan, the iFly will keep track of your position and send commands to the Dynon to keep the plane on the magenta line..   I.E. fly a heading, fly a track, fly a course, change altitude, .....    Dynon will then act on the command given how you have configured the Autopilot parameters.

If you don't have a flight plan, the Dynon AP can track a VOR or a heading.  You can also manually set the altitude.  This comes in handy when flying through controlled airspace.  I willl have the AP hold an altitude and heading.   If ATC asks for a turn, I'll dial it in via the AP74.    Clear as mud??

I have pretty close to the same panel in my RV8... D180 D100 AP74 and HS34. 

I was curious as to the new A/P software...is this a new update?

Nice looking panel!!

The iFly AP software was updated earlier in 2020.  I've just returned to the US after a 2-year overseas assignment so I'm just catching up.   One of the key callouts was adding "anticipated turn" logic to the iFly AP software.  If iFly knows there is a turn ahead it will caculate the radius of a turn required to join the next leg and initiate the turn prior to reaching the waypoint.  So much smoother than the previous version.

I find your post very interestng since the new to me plane has much the same equipment, Dynon D100 EFIS and D120 EMS and iFly 740b.  However I do not have the HS34 or AP74.  The previous owner hand a TruTrak / Bendix Xcruz but reported could never get it to work well, so he removed it.  I have been strongly considering getting Dynon servos and AP74 and giving the Dynon system a try.  Full disclosure, when I bought the plane it did not fly straight (heavy left wing, yaw to the right).  Corrected the rigging and it flies straight hands off now.  Perhaps ill handling plan was more than the AP could handle?

One question/problem I'm having is I bought from iFly the USB to Serial cable.  Following the videos, I can get the 740 to recognize the cable if it is not connected to anyting dynon.  Then plug into the Dynon serial and it works.  However, if I shut it down and leave everything connected, it will not recognize the USB/serial cable, I have to unplug from the Dynon.  I have confirmed NMEA setting, baud rate and sentences, etc.

Any thoughts?

Hi Darrin,

Both my buddy and I are using a panel mounted Ifly, connected to ship's power,  to drive our Dynon APs.   I have the D100/120, he has a D180.  Both work as advertised.    I would check your ground connection.   On our installations the ground wire from the USB is connected to the ground pin on the Dynon, not to the airframe ground. 

The AP74 is not required to use the Dynon AP, but it makes it 100% more uesable.  In addition to adding EMS audio alerts, the buttons and knobs make it so much easier to manage the AP.   Unfortunately the AP74 is no longer in production.  You might be able to pick one up on the used market.   LMK if you have any questions.
