720 vs 740b Alerts

I fly open cockpit. I recently upgraded to a 740b from the 720. I love the brighter screen, but I have a problem with the alerts. On my old 720, I had a very loud audible alert for towers and airspace warnings. It was a very loud "dwang" that I could easily hear with my headset gelseals on. My new 740b gives a VERY feeble audio warning. I can just barely hear it if I have the headset pulled away from my ear. Is there any way to to restore the audible alert so as to make it useful in an open cockpit. I have checked all the seting that I know of and the 740b is set up like m old 720. I'm sure I have the volume maxed out. I feel this is a giant step backwards as far as safety is concerned.

I have the same problem with my 740 (not b). Finally added a Boosteroo T613 to bump up the audio level. I can now hear the audio.

Byron how does this work? Does this allow you to hear the audio alert through your headset or did you hook an external speaker to it? I don't see that this device has a speaker built into it.

This plugs in to the headset jack on the iFly gps. I then connect a cord from the Boosteroo output to the aux input on my PM3000 intercom. The Boosteroo has an on/off switch only. It amplifies the sound to about double what it receives from the gps. You control the volume with either the iFly or the intercom. It uses 2 each AA batteries for power. Cost is about $25.

I had tried every volume setting I could find and replaced the audio cord as well. My intercom works fine with my phone, but not with the GPS. Now I can hear the alert "twangs", altitude alerts, and even music I have stored on the 740.

Perhaps since you are flying open cockpit you could use an external speaker if you do not have an intercom.

Thank you for the explaination. I have been looking into patching it to my MGL v6 radio. I think that may be an option. I have also thought of just wiring a speaker that would be mounted to the top of my seat just below my left ear. I may need the amplifier that you are using to make the speaker lound enough.

I have spoken with a couple other 740 owners who state that they can't hear the audio alerts either. I really miss that aspect of the 720.
