I have a Skysensor for ADS-B IN on my airplane. I've noticed that the position of traffic on my 740b is dramatically different depending on my zoom level. Traffic that is .6nm in front of me will show up as behind my aircraft icon at my normal cruise zoom level. At my normal zoom level I have a 5 and 10 mile range ring on screen. Even for more distant traffic I have to zoom in to get a real idea of their position. Anyone else notice this?

Without screenshots, it's hard to visualize whether what you're saying is expected behavior or not.  .6nm is pretty close.  I don't know what your "normal cruise zoom level" is, but it wouldn't take much zooming out to make it look like you were right on top of that traffic.

Some people misunderstand how the traffic icon represents the location--the traffic is at the pointy tip of the arrowhead, not in the middle of the arrowhead.  Is that how you've been interpreting the display, or does that maybe explain some of what you thought were descrepancies?

I tried to clarify my zoom level by stating that see 5 and 10 mile range rings. Turn on range rings and zoom until the argest ring you see is the 10 mile. That should give you an idea of where my zoom is at.

I'll grab a screen shot next time out. The arrowhead isn't so big as to be a problem in interpreting where the traffic is. I find the actual position of the traffic seems off quite a lot compared to where it is represented on screen. I'll see the arrowhead completely behind my wing on screen and actually see the traffic in front of my wing. Likewise if the traffic is shown as just off to the right of my nose it is actually passing my nose. It's like leading a duck when hunting, I have to look well ahead of where it is shown on screen to actually see it.

I'm sorry; yeah, that didn't click when I read it the first time--thanks.

Would you say this is a constant offset in location (like a helicopter hovering over a spot is shown in the wrong spot), or a lag where iFly is consistently showing traffic a little "behind" where they really are (where it was a few secs ago vs. where it is right this instant)?  I have not observed the former (and think that's unlikley to occur), but if it's the latter, could it just be limitations of the technology and having proper expectations for how the system works, similar to how weather radar imagery is a few minutes old by the time it hits your screen?

There is always going to be some delay between when a target reports "I am here" and when that information gets to iFly and hits the display.  Half a mile between targets could close in as little as ~10-15 seconds for common piston singles, or quicker with faster planes.  I wouldn't expect the system to have 15 sec of delay built in (especially if you're getting a direct broadcast from the traffic), but I really don't know what the ADSB-rebroadcast delay might be.

I've noticed that the ADS-B displayed traffic is always behind where it is in the sky at that moment. I believe it's due to the delays in reporting, relaying, and displaying. I look in front of the indicated direction of the traffic to find it in the sky. I'm very successful at seeing most of it, so usually give it lots of clearance or fly behind the indecated traffic.
