I used iFly to file an IFR flight plan. I got confirmation of filing from iFly and very quickly thereafter got a confirmation email form Lockheed Martin. I then canceled the flight plan in iFly. Again, got confirmation of successful cancelation from iFly. But, this time no email from Lockheed Martin. Is this expected behavior?

Also, the filing confirmation email from Lockheed Martin was pretty terse. Essentially, it just said “Filed Successfully”. DUATS provides a much more informative email containing the entire flight plan (including routing). Also, DUATS sends another email when ATC invariably changes the expected IFR routing. Anybody know if Lockheed Martin supports this feature?

One option you might consider is to create a free account on FlightAware.com. You can set it up to monitor a specific tail number and provide you with text and/or email notifications any time a flight plan is filed, opened, or closed, as well as a head's up when the plane is x minutes from its planned destination (x defaults to 45, but is user-adjustable). The "plan filed" messages include ATC's preliminary route information that you're looking for. (I don't know if it will send additional notices if ATC changes the plan.)

It's not hard to set up one-time (or during a specified window of time) alerts to provide all (or a selected subset) of that information to a third party. This can be handy if you're flying somewhere to meet someone, or if a loved one is interested in following you for a specific flight or series of flights.

Note that all this information is provided by FlightAware regardless of how you file. (DUATS, LM, telephone, in-air, etc.)

If you rent, this would not be a great solution, as you'd have to go enable / inhibit the alerts each time you rented, and update the tail number, unless you wanted to get taunted by all the folks flying those planes while you weren't!

So, from your reply, I take it that the interaction I experienced with Lockheed Martin is as expected (simply confirmation that the flight plan was filed, no confirmation of flight plan cancelation, no notice of route changes by ATC)? Perhaps a better (or additional) solution than using FlightAware.com, as you suggested, is to have the option for iFly to file and cancel flight plans with DUATS rather than LM. Perhaps I’ll post that on the Wish List board.

"Is this expected behavior?"

Why don't you ask LM?

"Why don't you ask LM?"

Figured somebody on this forum might have seen the same behavior and all here might be interested. Plus the iFly staff may know the answer and would be much more responsive.
