Hello Walter,

What is the likelihood that the ADS-B transceivers that are able to link with iFly 700\720 units will be certified by the FAA for 2020 compliance? I'd like to buy one but I'm concerned that I would end up having to buy another unit when the requirement hits.

Don, the creator of the SkyGuard, is progressing with the FAA on certifying his unit. He is pretty confident it will happen. Some of the components may need to be replaced - IE the external GPS puck and the transmit antenna, so his plan is to sell a Certification Kit at some point to owners who have purchased the currently non-certified version.

Precisely! And possibly well beyond 2020.

No promises, and I wouldn't bank on it, but the history of these expensive aeronautical equipment mandates is that they get delayed before their original implementation date is reached. A mandate that scrapped many aircraft radios because of frequency stability was delayed from 1990 to 1997! If memory serves, the ELT mandate was also delayed.

Will the ADS-B mandate also be delayed? Your guess is as good as mine, but already Congress is starting to hear complaints: See http://tinyurl.com/mfemudu

I have the Sky Guard TWX living in the extended luggage compartment in my C172. Three "Blade-type" antennae (980Mhz-out; 980Mhz-in; 1020ES) are suction-cupped to the rear window along with the GPS puck. The unit talks wirelessly to my iFly 720. It works pretty well, but sometimes traffic is intermittent. I'm considering going to permanently mounted antennae on the bottom of the fuselage for better reception. Is this a practical semi-permanent configuration, or am I off base? (I'm trying to get the most out of the unit until 2020) Any thoughts?
