Not sure I'm a fan of the suggestion to make the "moving map" not be a moving map after takeoff. I espeicially don't think I like the idea of requiring a manual action (zoom change or press the "center" button) to make the map start "behaving normally".

I think that would introduce an unintuitve inconsistency of behavior, causing the casual user to mentally ask, "Why is this thing not working like I expect it to? It's stuck!" which would also be an undesired distraction in the cockpit.

I agree. I also think the zoom level upon start up should be a user selectable default.

Here's the direction I think we're leaning for this, and I already have it implemented. From now on, I believe the best solution is for Auto-Taxi to PRESERVE your current mode. If you *were* Tracking the airplane (i.e. "moving map" mode), then when it switches to Auto-Taxi, it'll preserve this setting and *keep* you in Tracking mode. And the opposite is also true, if you were in Non-TRacking mode, then when it switches, it *keeps* you in Non-Tracking mode. And Vice versa, same logic applies when going from Taxi mode to zoomed out map mode. I think this should provide most people with an expected behavior -- 'preservation of state'.

Also, for the next beta release, we're tightening the zoom level limits, and within reason, preserving your previous zoom level. Hopefully, what you see in the next beta performs much better to everyone's expectations. We try to preserve your previous zoom level, but it is clamped to be within the range of zoom level 9 to 12.

What are the nm scales at those two zoom levels? Thanks.

Sounds good - let's try it & see how it works.

If it needs more tweaking, I just "discovered" the Auto-Track Plane setting for the map. (Which I've never used. Always been disabled, so the map always slides ownship to show 2/3 ahead?) There are options there involving time that I don't understand. But if I'm guessing right, it appears that an option could be added as a variation, such that the map starts centered on airport and then, after a certain distance from Departure airport, the map centers on ownship.

[This is from the perspective of someone who almost always uses VFR or IFR map in North Up mode.]

Think of it as the transition to cruise climb after leaving the Traffic Pattern. So if you're doing T'n'G's, the map doesn't jump around and stays centered on the airport. (Would help keeping sight of inbound Traffic, since targets wouldn't be shifting with each turn in the pattern.) Same when you're doing two 90's on a downwind departure. Map doesn't shift until your out of the Pattern and on course. (Say 3.5 miles away?)

Kinda like how I'm guessing most of us use Plates. I don't want the IAP constantly moving around on approach. I center the Plate and see where I am relative to the airport. [Again, North Up.]

It's zoom levels 9 to 12 are the low/high points. As you tap the "+/-" zoom buttons, the zoom level should show at top/middle of screen for a brief second for you to read it.

On a 740 in landscape mode, for me:
Zoom 9 equates to 2.6 nm wide
Zoom 12 equates to 7.6 nm wide
