I'm seeing a couple of odd things that are probably just due to my tablets "maturity", but I thought I'd double check. At closer zoom levels, the courseline turns into a single pixel wide line, as if touch-holding ones finger on the screen, but only seems to do this on approach plate overlays. The other thing is that the waypoint names along a route seem to show up at intermediate zoom levels only. Zoom in too close or out too far and they vanish. Are these behaviors normal? Will they go away if/when I get a newer tablet?

Thanks,

Jim

That's normal behavior. Some approach plates are chock full of text and symbols and instructions, and the wider course line and waypoint names were sometimes covering critical approach information. When this happens, zoom in to see the raw approach plate details.

Ah. I was afraid of that. Over a year ago I expressed in the wish list that the course line be made translucent. The press and hold to feature to make the line momentarily thin was a decent alternative, but I'm really not crazy about the always thin line. Hard to see. Time for another suggestion, which would be...

1. Translucent, 2. option to NOT go thin automatically, 3. invert present function and when always thin have a touch hold make it go momentarily wide. And I'd like to have waypoint labels all the time. Again maybe a user option.

When geo-referenced plates were first added the course line didn't change size and waypoints didn't disappear. It wasn't long before it became apparent that critical information could be covered up and no amount of panning, zooming, etc. would get it to a readable position. Not a good thing when you need to know the minimum altitude for a segment and the number is permanently covered up, so the current plan was adopted. And now that the entire approach route can be loaded, there's lines and waypoints all over the plate (initially the course line was direct to the field without showing the actual approach course). So even though it's a huge step forward in situational awareness, now there's even more opportunity for critical info to get covered. I remember shooting an approach shortly after the plates became geo-referenced, and mid-approach had to delete the flight plan so I could read the plate. Maybe iFly can tweak it with your suggestions and still be able to declutter the screen while still maintaining situational awareness.

Maybe once you're past the FAF, the course line could go thin or disappear automatically? You don't need to see it once you're on the approach 'cause you know what your course is. And as Jeff points out, the normal couse line often obliterates critical data on the Plate. While I really like geo-ref Plates, I find myself tapping the Plate a lot on an ILS to read the Plate. Not something I should be doing on an ILS.
