The "experiments" are watching the 1090 units via a PC with live-time feeds. That is how I compare the 1090 data. It seems that iFly is not showing them, even when set to 'unlimited.' Is anyone else not seeing all those airliners (with similar options turned on?)

Thanks,

David

"A PC with live-time feeds" from the internet, or from the Freeflight?

You say where you're doing your testing, you're not in range of a ground ADSB tower, so I think you're expecting to be receiving these 1090 messages directly from the big iron aircraft, right? But you say most of the aircraft are 200nm away, around Memphis? Is it reasonable to expect the Foreflight to be receiving messages from planes 200nm away? (Sorry; I'm probably misunderstanding you somehow.)

Why, yes, I do. The little $20 SDR (software defined radio) with dirt cheap antenna saw them must fine on the PC. Of course, they were at 35k feet, more or less, so slant range must have been fine.

I also saw some going over in other, nearer places as well, but not nearly as many as around Memphis.
Jeez, you guys can't take a guys word for nuttin'.

David, do you have a tablet, for which Free Flight has Apps to test alongside.

For iOS/iPad/iPhone, the app name is "ADS-B View". For Android, it's "ADS-B Tester".

I haven't tested these apps, I just googled them to see if they existed. If these apps show Traffic not shown by iFly, then I should be able to fix it. But if they don't show the traffic, then the problem is probably with the Free Flight receiver.

If you want, you can also try this:
1. Menu => About => Connected Devices => Wireless Device => => Enable ADSB Logger
2. Then run it with Free Flight for about 15 minutes.
3. Then do "Menu => About =>.... => Disable ADSB Logger" (uncheck the box).
4. Then restart iFly.
5. Then Menu => About => Send Bug Report => Select Log ==> Scroll to bottom, select "AdsbRaw.bin".
6. Send the bug report... I can use this file to regenerate all data being sent to us by Free Flight.

In my use I have found several things to look for upon connection. You didn't mention if you were using dual antennas or not. YOu will need the second 1090 dongle to receive any airliner traffic if you are receiving the towers from home on 978. use your browser after you have the stratux wifi connection made. Point the browser page to 192.168.10.1. This settings page will show you both antennas and the traffic received on each. Make sure both are turned on. I don't think the earlier vesions of stratux software have capability for both so make sure the image you loaded is version 2 or higher or the later beta versions. When connected via wifi, when you go to menu, about, then connected devices I look for a heartbeat that confirms connection. There are 3 or 4 ads-b devices that will actually work but the freeflight is a known one. If you are receiving any traffic it will also show up in the connected devices window. Also make sure you you have the altitude set to unlimited as well in the setup alerts menu. I have not received any 1090 traffic direct from airliners that were more than aobut 90-100 miles away. In Virginia on the East Coast it is normal to track 4 or 5 at a time.
