Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

Thought I saw one actually sold here..in the $500 range.

Any strong opinions or caveats or recommendations anyone care to mention...or point me to old postings for, before I throw $500 at one if those ?

FWIW:
# despite any limitations I figure ANY device giving me any info on any nearby traffic would be a valuable supplement to what I have now ..,which is my eyes, radio, and occasionally VFR flight following.
# any ADS-B device costing more than ~$1000 might for me, for now, be off-the-table unless it walks on water unless it walks on water or leaps tall buildings in a single bound and includes virtual vision .

For traffic, I'm almost of the opinion that no ADS-B is better than ADS-B in. I know others will disagree and it makes a difference where you fly. My recommendation is to come up with the extra cash and get an ADS-B in/out device. Now, if it's primarily for Nexrad radar, ADS-B in is fine. That's just my opinion FWIW.

Aside from the obvious .....that ADS-B in would give me some, if not 100%, info of traffic around me that I otherwise would surely not be aware of.....there are already numerous reports from ADS-B in users of avoiding near collision incidents due to having it. And, as you say, it does give you live weather aloft.

So I'm very curious what possible reasons , other than cost maybe, anyone could have for believing no ADS-B is BETTER than ADS-B in.

Are you concerned that in that situation a pilot could get a false sense of safety...believing he/she now has info on every possible conflict, when that's not so?

Anyhow... Still hoping to hear some recommendations or report of ADS/b in on iPad.

Alex,

Maybe I can give some you info on ADS-B In. If you are set on ADS-B In, and using it on an iPad or Android, the Dual XGPS 170 is a very reliable unit. As long as you know traffic will be greatly reduced, it is probably the best value on the market for ADS-B In. Keep in mind it will not work with the iFly dedicated devices as it is Bluetooth. If you want to use with an iPad and an iFly, look at the Pathfinder by Flight Data Systems, it's WiFi and a very solid performer too. These are some great basic ADS-B receivers for good Weather and limited traffic.

Now, if you are looking for a more robust ADS-B In step up, or possibly going to equip with ADS-B Out in your plane via a Mode S upgrade like an ES upgrade for a GTX330, KT74 or Lynx out module. You might want to look at the iLevil2 SW or AW, these add AHRS and dual band receiving capability. I personally like having a Dual Band receive option as it give you more capability to receiver traffic aircraft to aircraft as we get closer to 2020. Also, the AW adds the ability to input the Engine monitoring and Pitot/Static data for us to use in a later update. These will cost a much higher amount, upwards of $1200, so you really want to make sure that is the ADS-B out route for you.

Now if you are looking at ADS-B In/Out as a combined solution. There are several option. The SkyGuardTWX Vision-Pro+ is a great Experimental and LSA option that is 2020 compliant, and they are working on the TSO, STC or type certified. Additionally, for certified planes, the NavWorx ADS600B is a great unit as well as the FreeFlight Ranger. Both are certified for 2020 in type certified planes with the NavWorx having a lower cost.

Feel free to contact me in the office, if you need some more information on any of these ADS-B units. We sell some and some we just recommend. I hope this helps.

Great info, Shane..... in the sort of summary/overview/digest form I can easily grasp all at once!
Thanks!

At the risk of confusing (or at least "diverting") the topic:

Which of these solutions, if any , would put an artificial horizion onto the screen of either the iFly iPad or iFly 740 instrument's screen?

Reason I ask is our reasonably, but not deeply, instrumented LSA has no artificial horizon in the dash.
And although not necessary, as we fly only VFR, nice to have one
When I ty to add the artificial horizion to the 740's screen it says something along the lines of "AHRS device not connected." Not surprising, as the 740 itself has no reliable way to know if it's level.
