I took advantage of you SN-F special and bought a Dual XGPS170. Now some question using it with iFly.

First, it appears once paired, it will not auto connect to the iPad. You have to go into the iPad settings and select the Bluetooth connection. This only takes a moment to connect. I understand this is not uncommon with non Apple Bluetooth devices.

Once you start iFly, it does auto connect to the Dual XGPS when previously selected from the connected device menu. You then get the ADS-B indication on the iFly screen. If you leave iFly and then come back, the Dual does not auto reconnect. It will, if you go into connected devices and select NONE and then go back and select Dual XGPS170.

These are my observations.

Could you publish the preferred method of getting iFly and XGPS170 communicating?

Ray,

That is correct. Bluetooth and some Peer-to-Peer devices need to be set to automatically connect. This is common on Apple and Android. Many of the Android apps need a "helper" to connect to the Dual and other external or Bluetooth GPS units. We built a helper right into the iFly GPS App.

We will try and replicate this and get a fix out should it be a bug. Thanks for your feedback and bringing this to our attention. Also can you provide what Tablet you have and that you have the latest iFly GPS version app?

FYI: If you leave iFly GPS, you might try touching Menu, Exit Application. Then upon opening iFly GPS back up, see if you Dual connection is active. Please allow upto 10 seconds or so for it to make the connection. We'll do some additional testing here to help identify this behavior.

I am running a Apple iPad Mini, 64g with retina display. Software version shows iOS 7.1, which shows as up to date.

iFly version is 8.1.67.

All observations are on the ground, not in flight.

First is the iPad to Dual XGPS170. Dual does not auto connect. You have to go into the iPad settings and select the Dual. This may be normal with non apple Bluetooth devices.

Second, start iFLY GPS. The iFly connects to the Dual and the GPS fix indicator switches from the 4 bars GPS display to the ADS-B indicator.

Third, shut down iFly by exiting the app. Then restart iFly. About 25% of the time, ifly reestablishes the ADB-B connection with the Dual and ADS-B indicator is displayed. But, most of the time the ADS-B display does not come up. Then you need to go into the menu, select “none” for connected devices. Then go back into the menu and select Dual XGPS. Sometimes, this takes a few tries before the ADS-B indicator is displayed.

The Dual settings are XGPS preferred, YES; XGPS idle, never; GPS update. NORMAL.

One other question, how many ADSB towers are required to get information. I live on a hill at 1650 MSL and the tower is 25 miles away. If I find the right spot in my house, I can get indication of ADSB Towers: 1.

Ray,

To receive Weather Radar/Data and TIS-B Traffic information, you'll need to see a minimum of 1 ADS-B tower. You can however, receive Air-to-Air Traffic without any towers being indicated.

As for the ADS-B re-connection. I think we have a refresh bug to work out there, basically needs to refresh that ADS-B connection after a sleep of exit/re-entry of the App. Stay tuned and thanks for the feedback.

I repeated this on my iPad and send a "bug report", I hope this helps..

FYI, while running the Dual utillity, I put the iPad to "sleep", the white light went off the XGPS170, when the iPad reopened, the white light came back on.
