Many thanks! That IS promising and if the trend holds, I will be able to afford it in due time...

Does your $2500 include the installation?

My shops here are charging around $2,000 for installation.

Also, I have an anolog transponder which is original Cessna equipment in my '77 airplane. Do you think that would work with the system you have, or would I have to also purchase a newer transponder which is digital (not analog)?

I've been flying for 53 years.  Soloed at 16, Private at 17, Commercial at 18, CFI at 19.  Added advanced ground instructor, instrument ground instructor, multi-engine, multi-engine CFI, and seaplane later.  Believe me, the sky is not falling.  I've owned 3 airplanes and leased 50 percent of my friend's Mooney M20C for years.  Everything changes and advances over time.  It's time for the ATC to advance.  Some people will complain about anything and everything the government is involved with.  I am not one of those people.  Those people should get themselves elected or go to work for the FAA and see how well they can manage things, etc.

At least you have a medical and own an airplane.  I'm retired with no medical, so I fly Light Sport.  I have lots of hours and lots of ratings, but I am restricted to daytime VFR in an LSA.  I missed out on Basic Med by 45 days.  THAT'S 45 DAYS.  I didn't complain.  I just said OK, LSA is good.  You should stop complaining and do some research and figure out how to afford your ADS-B out.  In the mean time, I'm renting a SkyCatcher because I have been retired 13 years and can't afford to own an airplane on my pension and soclal security.  I spent most of my airplane money to buy my wife a new car.  Life is not always fair, it seems.  My wife is probably going to outlive me by 20 or 30 years, so I need to make sure she is taken care of, etc.

$2500 was the cost of the hardware after the rebate. I installed it myself with my AP/IA's sign off. I did have to upgrade my analog altitude encoder to a digital, but I changed from an ACK mod 4 to a mod 9.  Same mounting tray, so no change there, and same harness with addition of 2 wires added to the connector. Very simple installation. I purchased the encoder (used) for $125. New it was $250. The entire installation was not hard at all, just pay attention to the details. Customer support was useful too if I had any questions (I did).  Passed the validation test on the first flight, not a problem. With the wifi module, I receive ADS-B info on both my 740 and an ipad, and I can also share flight plans because of it. I didn't have to fly any distance to do the flight, as I am based within a Class B, Mode C veil airspace.

Very, very sorry to hear about your advanced cancer, Tim. No intention here to irritate you - hope you enjoyed the dialog as much as I did.

Indeed, things like cancer put "first world" problems into perspective.

I wish you the very best and admire you for continuing to fly in spite of this malady.

I will conclude my remarks here and consider this thread closed from my end. Appreciate your candor and colorful advice.

Thanks.  It just puts things in perspective.  I'm doing well for now.  I did quit drag racing after buring through about $100,000.  My point is, people should count their blessings more and complain less.
