Tried submitting this through the website but didn't get any response.   CFII would like me to disable the airplane icon.   Closest thing I can figure out is turn off GPS, but then I lose my tracking and my fuel reminder.  Seems a blank icon would be a very easy solution.

Why have a navigational gps if your cfi doesn't want YOU to use it?! Your secondary features are just that. This is is for navigation not your cfi desires.
Either turn it off and use VORs or find a cfi that understands technology.

Greg, I'm going to assume you're not instrument rated. EFBs are NOT  for IFR navigation. They are WONDERFUL for situational awareness. Almost too good.  When you're flying a DME arc, it's hard not to look where you're at in relation to the arc, especially when you have to look at the approach plate. Hold entries are another one.

Even if GPS wasn't a thing, an EFB like iFly would be unbelievably useful so you don't have to carry all the paper charts & plates & replace them every few weeks.

It's not the the CFII doesn't want me to use the tablet, in fact he agrees that it'd be stupid not to, and he uses one both to instruct and in personal flying.   The issue is that DPE's will often ask that the icon be turned off to make sure you're navigating on instrument, not on the tablet, so I need to be prepared to do so.  It seems like it would be an exceedingly simple feature to add, considering we already have star wars icons.

Actually I use an Avidyne 540 for ifr, but I also have my ifly 740 in the cockpit as a backup. If a DPE doesn't want you to use your gps for a given time just turn it off. For Adventure  Pilot to add that feature probably would be easy to do but not feasible for the chance a DPE might ask you to turn it off.

Two other things you could try:

If you're using one of the iFly devices, as I recall, the remote on/off button just turns the screen on and off, but the program/map/tracking/etc remains operational.  If your instructor want's to verify you're not watching the iFly, you could simply turn it off, or give him the remote and he can turn it off and on randomly.

If you drag the screen so the aircraft icon leaves the viewing area, it will stay there until you push the recenter button in the lower left side of the screen, or the "Plane" button on the remote.  Everything else will continue, you'll just not have a moving map any more.
