After waiting about 45 minutes for the update it won't load. It gave the error message from the subject line. Whats up with that? The start up time for the unit is long enough that doing separate updates for each chart would be just as long or longer than doing the single download but after all that time I keep getting error messages. Am I doing something wrong or is there a software issue here? I'm using version 6.0.8

next issue here is that my travel drive keeps filling up with update files that do not show up in the file folders after downloading to the unit. I can't find any hidden files on my drive either so the only way to delete them is to format the drive. That might not be an issue if the drive was dedicated to just the IFly but I use it for other stuff and have to move files I don't want deleted. Once again, am I missing something here?

(Note: I do not work for Adventure Pilot. I'm just another user who's taking a stab at trying to help...but I may not be any help at all!)

As a reminder of how the process is supposed to work, when you perform an update, you should be downloading a file from the AP website with the name "iFlyUpdatePackage.zip". You should then transfer this file to the root (topmost) folder on a USB drive (if you didn't download it directly there to begin with). You should then either insert the USB drive into the iFly prior to powerup, or else insert it after the iFly has entered Navigation mode and then choose Menu>Check for Update File.

The iFly will then look for an "iFlyUpdatePackage.zip" file on the USB drive, and if it finds one, it will perform the update, and delete the .zip file when complete.

If you or your browser is unzipping the update file into its multiple component files first, then you are essentially destroying the update package and the iFly will not recognize that an update is available. (I think this isn't actualy your problem, but your note is somewhat vague so I'm just making sure.)

Next thing to check is that update files must be less than 2GB in size. If you're trying to update everything at once, you'll bust that limit. Break up your updates into 2 or 3 chunks and make sure each chunk is less than 2GB.

Finally, I have no idea what you mean by "my travel drive keeps filling up with update files that do not show up in the folders after downloading to the unit". Are you saying that after the iFly deletes the .zip file, the space the .zip file was using isn't freed up from your USB drive? That sounds like a weird USB drive issue, not an iFly issue.

Have you tried using a different USB drive? If you've got an older, smaller drive (like 2GB or so), try giving that a shot. The WindowsCE operating system used by the iFly may have trouble with newer, bigger USB drives.

If none of that helps, you might try posting a little more detail about your problem (what computer / OS / browser (and version) / USB drive brand / model (and size) are you using? What filename(s) are you copying over to your USB drive? How big are the update files? Try again to describe exactly what is happening with your USB drive after an update (re: the files that are there but not there). Etc.)

I am downloading the updates from the site onto my travel drive (thumb drive, usb drive or whatever you want to call it) as a zip package. I am picking the stuff I want updated of course but its all one update. I then stick the travel drive into the IFly and hit check for updates. It does this and then tells me exactly whats in the subject line of the first post. Something is missing from the update. I've downloaded the same update 3 times and on the third try it finally seems to have worked. The issue is why is it doing this? I've now spent over 4 hours of download time to do a simple update. The file size was 259MB so its definitely not too big. Variable speed on the broadband isn't helping but thats not an AP issue. I'm not removing or trying to install individual pieces of the update so I don't know what you mean by any of that. I am using the "safely remove hardware" setup on this windows computer and always have so as to avoid the problem of hot removal of the drive.

The issue with the files filling my 512MB travel drive is that when I download 259MB of update to it and then update the gps the files are no longer visible on the travel drive when its viewed on the computer. It shows nothing there as in no files, no folders and nothing related to the update zip file. However, the 259MB of space is still taken up on the travel drive. If I then download a 300mb update it tells me there is insufficient space to download the data. I then have to move all the non related files I want to keep to some location on my hard drive and then format the travel drive to delete the invisible, used, update files. Then I can put all my stuff back and download up to 500MB of data to the drive. The zip file is being used to update the GPS but the files are not being deleted from the travel drive. So the question I am asking is why are they not removed and how do I make it remove them without formatting the travel drive? It isn't a problem with just this one travel drive either, I've had it happen to more than one unit or micro SD card so I don't think its related to the card/drive. It may be my computer settings but nothing I can find. I'm not a programmer and never will be so maybe its something simple for a computer weenie but not for me....

I feel for you, Bud. I've had other issues with USB drives with the iFly (i.e. FAT vs NTSF etc...). What I found was that if I spent a $20 bill (3.5 gallons of Avgas) on a 2Gb drive and left it formatted as delivered in the package most all my woes went away. Life's too short to have to go through what you are describing for a mere update. With the larger drive Windows will automatically release the "hidden" space as updates come in subsequently. As you know when the iFly loads an update it erases the update zip file from the USB stick drive as a convenience. But for Windows CE to do it's cleanup housekeeping it has to have a certain amount of free buffer space on the drive.

As an aside I discovered I can load multiple update files one after another at the same time. That is, if I download weather and TFRs as "iflyupdatepackage.zip" and then immediately download some sectionals as another update Windows will automatically call the next downloaded sectional update "iflyupdatepackage(1) .zip" and then any subsequent updates will have the next sequential number in parentheses (normal Windows behavior when a file hs the same name as an existing file). Then, when I plug the USB drive with multiple update files into the iFly I can load each update manually one after another. The iFly will even show you a list if the different updates and ask which one you want to install first. That was a real nice surprise.

Back on subject USB keychain drives are cheap enough these days there's no reason to not have a 2Gb or larger size USB device dedicated to the iFly. I recently changed over to a 32Gb Corsair Survivor that I keep a large amount of other stuff on and it works flawlessly. I keep it on my pocket keyring so I always have it on my person.

I understand that the drives are cheap now and it shouldn't be a problem to have 100 of them around other than keeping track of whats what....
I've used the 2GB card as well and it has the same problems. It is in fact the drive I found this issue with so I don't think its a capacity thing. I guess I just keep dealing with it as I have.
