Shortly after lift-off, the display changes automatically from Auto-Taxi to Map Mode. This is fantastic, only the zoom-level of the map is not where I left it from my last flight, and have to hit the Zoom+ key about six times to get the range ring back to 2-miles (which is a handy range to help monitor ADSB traffic).

Defaulting to a zoomed-out display makes it look like all the traffic in your neighborhood is right on top of you, and departure is not a good time to be pressing buttons on the display of course. Is there any way to make iFlyGPS Android not clobber the zoom level from the last flight?

This seems like an excellent suggestion, and is easy for us to implement. In short, you just want the map zoom level to be preserved from what it was the last time before it auto-switched into Auto-Taxi mode, correct? Also, you are suggesting also that otherwise, our default zoom level when switching out of auto-taxi is too drastic, correct?

That would be great, and thanks for getting back to me so quickly about this. Yes and Yes. I made seven Young Eagle flights yesterday and really noticed this little issue.

Basically, I feel naked without the traffic ring up and I like to set up the screen for a 2-mile ring around the plane when in the high-traffic areas (like during departure). After things calm down in the enroute mode, it's nice to zoom-out to 5 miles or more, but I would like to be in control of when the zoom level changes thank you.

I also think this would be a good idea to try, perhaps coupled with my other (earlier) suggestion to "pin" the map with Departure airport centered until first zoom change or until Center button pressed. (Which is almost the same as "iFly, don't auto-Center when coming out of Airport Diagram.")

In my flying, I've started setting one iFly tablet to Vector mode before departure and zoomed in fairly tight around the airport so that I can see traffic easier. (Our airport has two flight schools now, training scads of Chinese & Koreans, and is becoming one of the busiest GA aircraft in the country.) The other tablet is in VFR mode for nav purposes.

I don't often set the first tablet as tight on zoom when returning back to our field. So for me, a "Departure preset zoom" would be more consistent than returning to previous zoom. (For example, at night, I often put the tablet to sleep on final to minimize glare in the cockpit.)

The reason for not Centering the map when coming out of Diagram mode is two fold: 1) It's distracting/vertigo inducing (esp. at night) when the map is constantly shifting as you do a crosswind/downwind departure and 2) similarly, it's difficult to reacquire Traffic when the map is constantly shifting as you turn 90 then 180 degrees on departure. (And this North Up. It would be worse with Track Up on Departure.)

Not auto-Centering the map would be even more important if a preset tight zoom was auto-enabled, since the shifting during Departure would be larger.

Not sure I'm a fan of the suggestion to make the "moving map" not be a moving map after takeoff. I espeicially don't think I like the idea of requiring a manual action (zoom change or press the "center" button) to make the map start "behaving normally".

I think that would introduce an unintuitve inconsistency of behavior, causing the casual user to mentally ask, "Why is this thing not working like I expect it to? It's stuck!" which would also be an undesired distraction in the cockpit.
