Hi Jim/all,

Am about to buy an iPad mini. In great part, but not soley, to use it as a backup for my 720.

Am a bit torn about whether to get a mini with apples built in GPS (which means buying one with cellular data plan capability.... though I don't HAVE to activate data plan) or a WiFi only model.

Ignoring for the moment that I might have uses for a cellular data plan, can anyone speak to the pros and cons of getting and using a mini with iFly with the built-in Apple GPS?

The obvious advantage of the built-in Apple GPS -- on net about the same price or less than buying a WiFi only and a third party GPS reciever... is having one less piece of hardware to carry around.

Finally, a question about "the 720 beats the iPad hands down."

Can you elaborate a bit on that?

Alex

Do not buy an iPad without the cellular/GPS capability ---- the built in GPS in the better model allows you to use Google maps and many other great features -- the WiFi only model does not have the GPS --- it uses cell towers to find your position --- much less reliable. ALSO, while a 32G iPad has enough memory for the iFly app, and some other stuff, the 64G gives you a lot more options.

I have both the iPad mine retina, and an older iPad 2, both 64G --- great in the airplane and very handy for other "stuff" ---

My 1.5cents worth.

OK, I just found a discussion confirming no GPS in the IPad Mini WIFI only. I guess if I could purchase a cellular version without a cellular data plan, that's what I would do.

That shouldn't be a problem. I had an iPad for a while before I ditched it in favor of Android, and I just bought data from AT&T a month at a time when I needed it, typically when I was traveling in the US. At home, I have plenty of wifi options so I don't need data. Same story now with my Nexus 7. I buy data two or three months a year when we are on the road in the US and that's it.

It's actually a little more difficult to have a smartphone without data if you are with one of the big carriers. They usually cram the data subscription down your throat. Not so with the MVNOs. I have my wife's and my Nexus 4 phones on PureTalk with no data plan. Total bill is usually around $15/month for the two of us. We don't use a lot of minutes.
