Hi folks. I’m presently in my 30 day trial of iFly GPS on my Android tablet, and I’m really liking it. I have been using another charting solution but I am having some issues, so I’m shopping. I must say that I am impressed with iFly. I’ll have a few suggestions but I figure it’s only fair to be a paying subscriber before making suggestions. :)

I have a few questions as I make my trials:

1. I’ve noticed that there are a surprising number of airport diagrams that are not geo-referenced, and they seem to be the more complex airports, where geo-referencing would be most handy. (I’m in the Northeast). What is the cause of that, and is that something that is being worked? (is it an iFly thing? or a chart supplier thing?)

2. I saw that seamless charts are coming soon. Sounds like we will have the ability to see the chart legends, but how will access to the SUA information on VFR sectionals be be preserved?

3. I love that any number of approach plates, SIDs, STARs, or airport diagrams I may need for a given flight are only two taps away (History then the chart desired). Is that feature being preserved or is it being replaced by one tap to the last chart?

4. With the new features coming in version 9, is the processing burden going up substantially, or should we expect speediness more or less comparable to what we have now?

Thanks! Jim

Also on 30-day trial...

Any enhancements to the Vector screens, at least depiction of VORs and their frequencies?

Also, resolution of color conflicts when a TFR is co-located with an airport reporting weather? TFRs are often not visible in this case.

I only had a chance to test fly iFly for one 2-hour flight before my plane became unavailable to me due to engine replacement, but I liked what I saw.

Hi guys, here are some answers:

- Some of the problems are FAA generated, the chart is sometimes out of scale or just simply wrong in some silly way. And some are because the 3rd party we use for georeferenced data has enough error that it didn't pass our QC process. The first problem we can to very little to solve. The 2nd problem we are actively working on, and so this will get better.

2. I saw that seamless charts are coming soon. Sounds like we will have the ability to see the chart legends, but how will access to the SUA information on VFR sectionals be be preserved?

We have snipped out all the interesting bits of all the plates into separate images, given them nice names, and we're giving you a nice UI to access these. So basically you'll tap the charts, select "Legends" option, and you will be given a list of legend bits to look at: "SUA Information", or "VFR Waypoints", or "VFR Corridor", etc. Will make it very easy to find the legend data you need.

3. I love that any number of approach plates, SIDs, STARs, or airport diagrams I may need for a given flight are only two taps away (History then the chart desired). Is that feature being preserved or is it being replaced by one tap to the last chart?

We're keeping the History option. But in addition we're allowing you "Pin" any number of plates to a flight plan. These will be listed at the bottom of the Flight Plan and can be accessed with 2 taps ("Flight Plan", "[Plate]"). This will give you a much more managable list than History.

4. With the new features coming in version 9, is the processing burden going up substantially, or should we expect speediness more or less comparable to what we have now?

Overall performance is about the same. Boot up time is faster by about 15%.

Any enhancements to the Vector screens, at least depiction of VORs and their frequencies?

VORs on Vector Mode is on our todo list, but won't be in the v9.0 release.

Also, resolution of color conflicts when a TFR is co-located with an airport reporting weather? TFRs are often not visible in this case.

With v9 you can select your Layers with just a couple of touches. Many of the layers can have their level of transparancy tweaked. And we've tweaked some of our default colors. I think this problem is solved.
