To add on with all the other posts... cool idea to think about but kind of defeats the purpose of SV. Also, with regards to actual radar returns, doing a live cutaway slice would be incredibly data and processor heavy. Plus it would be weird to read, look at the attached cutaway of a "normal" thunderstorm

Brolin, great picture of that thunderstorm.  What web site did you find that depiction?

Okay, I guess you guys are right--nice idea until you start thinking about what to do and how to do it.

One of several things that were on my mind at the time was this iPhone screenshot of a competitor's radar display of storm cells. It's top-down 2D, but does show a way of depicting the direcetion storm cells are moving.  So I was thinking about something in the EFIS that would do do do do... uh, something.  (It's not the best example, but the only one I have.)

While I wouldn't be against having the option to have a display with the arrows and such as depicted, I far prefer the iFly's choice to have the NEXRAD in motion.  It seems I can gauge the track or storm movement/trend easier by seeing the NEXRAD motion as opposed to trying to decode what the arrows mean.

FWIW, I have other (non-aviation) weather apps on my phone that include similar arrows, but in my experience when you watch the radar loop and compare where the weather actually went vs. where the arrows said the weather was going, the arrows are very often wrong.

That said, I don't know where the arrows come from, so I don't know if different apps might show different arrows and maybe some apps could have better arrows than others.

At any rate, I've learned/been trained not to give much credence to those arrows in the non-aviation wx app I most frequently use.  I would prefer not to have stuff like that in iFly if it's not reliable.  Like Mike, I find the radar loop function to give me the info I need to make educated guesses about how things are developing.
