So I am looking to buy an ADS-B receiver to use with IFLY for Android. I wanted to solicte some opinions of what ADS-B devices people are using and maybe the "why" behind it. I see the Dual 170 at $599 but most of the others are around $1,100 or so. What primary differences and capabilities does the more expensive ones have to offer.

Currently I am in the Kansas City area, but often fly to So. Florida or Upstate Ny, so WX is a must which all of them do, but wasn't sure of what the advantages of sign versus dual band.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I chose the SkyRadar DX from Radenna because it's wifi and will talk to Apple, Android, and iFly hardware. Beware Bluetooth-only devices such as the Dual 170 since it won't work with wifi-only iFly's. Also, some won't talk to Androids, such as my old SkyRadar L. I suggest you make a list of ADSB units that is guaranteed to work with your hardware and software, and then narrow it down to your personal requirements such as AHRS, ADSB-out, internal battery/ship powered, dual band/single band, best traffic alerts, budget, etc. I've had good luck with both my SkyRadar's and they seem to be the price/feature leaders. But I think all the bad hardware companies have gone out of business and the market is loaded with quality products. iFly has a few ADSB options for sale on their store page; I'm sure you can't go wrong with those. Good luck! Once you have weather in the cockpit you'll marvel at how brave you were to ever leave the pattern without it.

I agree, the Skyguard transceiver is great! I fly with a Samsung Galaxy, and iPad mini and an iFly 720 all connected via wifi to the Skyguard. If I were to suffer a failure of the Skyguard, I would loose my ADS-B weather and traffic, but the iFly and android would revert to their internal GPS. I like having the transceiver so I am not reliant on another aircraft in the area to "wake-up" the ADS-B ground station.

The traffic is fantastic! (I never realized how many aircraft are nearby that I never see!) and the weather is awesome for picking the best altitude for wind direction and speed (and of course the radar depiction of precipitation is a huge safety awareness plus as well.)

I was all set to go with the Skyguard --- I even installed all (3) Delta Pop external antennas, had the coax all made up, and then, and then ---- wait for it------ the 2020 "compliant" units from Navworx and Freeflight came out at a price point that makes the Skyguard (non-compliant, at this point) unattractive.

Anyway, I do have the external antennas installed.

EDIT: ---- Found a used Skyguard TWX at a price I could afford now ----- all hooked up and working great on my iFly and WingX on the ipad.

Will be moving up to a Freeflight (probably), or a Navworx, in the future.
